One thing that I always make sure to do when photographing a wedding is to capture all the intricate details. One method of capturing these details is to use flat lays.
Flat lays are photographs of items arranged on a flat surface and the picture is taken from above. This a great way to showcase wedding jewelry, accessories, invitations, flowers, and more.
You can use flat lays to showcase items in various ways. You can group items in a way that tell a story or even items by color. How ever you design your arrangement, the main key is to take the photo from above and ensure you have good lighting (either natural or artificial). Depending on the flat surface you are using, you may have to stand on a step stool to be able to get above your items.
Have fun when designing your flat lays. At a wedding you may see me gather up a bunch of different items to help tell the story I’m creating or showcase the details of your special day!
Here are a few of my favorite images that I have taken using the flat lay concept to highlight items of the wedding day.
